Lucena
Located in the southern portion of the province of Cordoba, Lucena is a Cordoba’s second largest city. The city offers a rich industrial base for it’s 41,000 residents. Lucena’s economy is largely supported by a wide array of furniture factories and shopping outlets. Skilled craftsmen in woodworking are usually able to find jobs with no trouble.
Though there are no airports in the immediate vicinity, Malaga’s airport is 119 kilometers from Lucena. Granada’s is a little farther, 140 kilometers. Once you fly into the area, two options are readily available. You can take rent a car in Lucena, or travel by train to Aguilar de la Frontera, a mere twenty-two kilometers away, and then take the bus into Lucena. Buses run hourly from Aguilar de la Frontera on Monday through Friday and every few hours on the weekends.
If you enjoy dining out, Lucena offers over twenty restaurants and bars. Most serve regional fare, but there are a few take-out pizzerias. Bars fill quickly with the friendly locals, so you can always expect to meet your neighbours during your night out. A number of small shops can be found on every street ensuring you can find the basics in town, along with a few inexpensive goodies you may not be expecting.
Families will be happy to know that there are a number of primary and secondary schools within the region. Children’s educations are important in this area.
Despite its strong industrial base, Lucena has many gorgeous buildings that must be visited. From the local courthouse located in a former castle to San Agustin, a 17th century convent that is unlike nothing you’ve seen before, historical buildings abound in Lucena. Town offices are located in the beautiful Castillo del Morale. The area’s history and many ancient buildings will appeal to genealogists and history buffs alike.
Another highlight of life in Lucena is the proximity to three nature reserves: Armaga Lagoon Nature Reserve, Jareles Lagoon Nature Reserve, and Malpasillo Reservoir Nature Park. Armaga Lagoon Nature Reserve is a saltwater lake that is home to many varieties of waterfowl. Jareles Lagoon Nature Reserve is a saltwater lake surrounded by olive groves. Jarelese Lagoon Nature Reserve is home to many amazing varieties of waterfowl and fauna. Malpasillo Reservoir Nature Park is the winter home to many varieties of waterfowl and birds including cormorants, teals, and peregrines.
Lucena offers a slow, relaxed lifestyle. An ample blend of historic buildings, fine selection of restaurants and bars, and reliable education system make this an excellent home for both the young and old. The city is located a bit of a distance from larger cities, but the quiet atmosphere makes it a perfect choice for those looking for city living with a more rural feel.
